Matthew Brown

Methodist Minister

He was the son of Matthew Brown and Jane Brown (nee Rhoades). At the outbreak of World War One, Matthew was at Cliff College training to be a Minister. He was called up for the Army and was taken prisoner of war. That mean`t he returned safely to England after the war. For some reason he did not go back to Collage to complete his training for the Ministry. He married in 1922, and had a small holding. Later he worked for his father at Baumber. He was a Class Leader and did considerable evangelistic work.

Subsequently he went away to do evangelistic work and become a Pastor. When the Conference agreed that Pastors could become Ministers he was ordained. He served in a number of places, including Gateshead and Ipswich. He retired around 1967 and died in December, 1979 at the age of 83.
